The cameras share a lot of similar specs in video mode, like the 100Mbps XAVC-S codec, 4K (UHD) internal recording, but the recording and crop modes differ as follows: The Sony a7S II records: 4K Full Frame: up to 30 fps. HD 1.6 crop: up to 60fps. HD 2.2 crop: up to 120fps. The Sony a7R II records: The a7S II uses an even smaller portion of the sensor when shooting HFR footage at 100fps and 120fps to maintain image quality at these high frame rates. Unlike standard HD recording that downsamples the output from the full the 12MP sensor, HFR mode uses a 1920 x 1080 portion of the sensor which results in a 2.2x crop factor.
This test was done with the Sony A7SII camera which is in my opinion very well suited for time-lapse photography, at least if 4K is sufficient for the final output (for 6K or 8K you need different cameras like the Sony A7RII). You can find the limits of the A7SII for manual adjustment with 5 sec. and 10 sec. intervals below in the test results.
Yup, manual lenses without electronic contacts don’t transmit focal length to the camera and while it’s pretty easy to set Manual steady shot settings for manual primes, zooms are another story. The second video shows the A7SII using initial wide area autofocus (completely confusing to a camera as there is a small object bag in the centre of the frame), Area autofocus (the same); followed by Centre and Manual Spot (both idea). Because the a7SII uses Contrast Autofocus rather than phase the central autofocus point illuminates as opposed.
